Hp Pavilion dv9000t Review: Overheats and Powers Off

UPDATE: April 28, 2007 - Unbelievable! HP finally shipped my replacement laptop - 64 days after I paid them and 46 full days after I shipped the defective one back - and they shipped me back the wrong laptop! This is truly unparalleled customer service. The laptop they sent me is missing three major components: the 512MB video card (came with 256MB instead), 2GB RAM (came with 1GB only), and the lower quality display (I had the top end). Back to the factory it goes for the second time in SIX WEEKS! You read it right - I sent them the laptop back for service on March 12 and just got it on April 27th and it's the wrong *&#^%$# laptop.

So I read all the reviews I possibly could and wanted to post my own experience with my brand new HP Pavilion dv9000t laptop. I bought it for $2048.00 on the hp.com store website and it was fully loaded:
* Intel T7200 Core 2 Duo chips (2.0ghz)
* Two 7200RPM SATA hard drives
* 17" monitor
* 256MB video (I didn't upgrade the video 'cuz I don't watch vids/play games)

It came in only a week after ordering it - a full week early! I was stoked. I booted it up, went through the setup, and started playing around and WOW IS IT FAST!!! It looks so sleek as well - the black swirlies are super cool and, although everyone of the reviews complain about how your fingerprints get everywhere, I didn't care at all. It just looked so damn sleek and was so fast that I didn't care.

Now, the negatives:
1) It lasted two weeks before I had to ship it back to the factory since it would periodically turn itself off once the CPU rose about 80% use
2) The keyboard is annoying. They've decided, since this is a bigger laptop, to fully utilize the space by giving you the number keys on the right just like on a "regular" keyboard. I don't need that!
3) The keys are just too damn small. I read 3 or 4 reviews about the HP dv9000 and all of them said, "It's cool but the keyboard's keys are just too small." I figured that people were being nit-picky so I bought it anyway. Well, my thoughts are that the important keys like the arrows and the Enter, Tab keys are way, way too small but the rest of the keys are okay. I wish the arrow keys in particular were bigger. Any time that I want to use the arrow keys to navigate somewhere, I have to stop, look down, and think about what I want to do. That should never happen...
4) HP Support has now had my laptop for longer than I have and they have no expected ship date back to me :(
5) I have a dedicated department that I need to speak to but I am not allowed to call them directly; I have to call the standard HP Customer Support line, wait on hold (waited for 21 minutes the other day just for that number) and then tell the CSR my information, wait for them to verify it and ask to be transferred to the next department. The CSR then puts me on hold (I waited 35 minutes on hold today at this juncture) before I talk to the person who can connect me to my Case Manager. Arrgghhh

Wait a minute - HP has your laptop still?

Yup. I mailed it back on March 12 and, as I write this, today is March 26. HP Support has now had my laptop as long as I did :(

It gets worse! I've now spent over 3.5 hours on the phone: over 2 of which I spent on hold listening to the same, "Need support for your HP laptop? HP Has the best support..." and all the crappy marketing messages that just grate on you after the 3rd time hearing them.

Where We Are Today

I just got off the phone with HP's "Service Status and Repair Status Department" and they have no new expected ship date. The most recent date shows March 23, 2007 with no further notes. I have been escalated to a Case Manager but I am not able to call them directly nor email them directly; they have to contact *me*. I give them my phone number and they will call me within 24-48 hours. If I miss that call, I have to call back in to the HP Support number, wait to talk to a CSR, get transferred to the Service Status Dept, and then ask to be trasnferred to a Case Manager. OMG is that asinine!

Here's the problems with my HP Pavilion dv9000t in the event that others experience the same thing:
1) If you do any intense operations on the laptop, it utterly powers down with no warning. It ran fine for two weeks (great, actually) but then one morning, I came into my office and fired up Outlook 2007 (on Vista) and it just shut off. "Wow! What the ?!?!", I thought to myself. I booted it up, tried launching Firefox and instant death occurred. "Hmmmmmm..." I was able to boot it back up and run a few programs but, as soon as I ran MS Word and Excel at the same time, it crashed again. I was frustrated so I went and ate breakfast with my family.

When I came back and booted it up, it worked great for about an hour and then the same symptoms began appearing. it was clearly an overheating issue at that point. I leave my laptop on 24/7 sitting on my desk and so, when I came into the office that morning, my HP dv9000 had overheated and was just shutting down as soon as the CPU started getting going.

I called HP Support and spent 1.3 hours on the phone going through all the support requests. They'll ask you to hold the power button down for six seconds since that discharges any power still left in the system. We tried removing one RAM chip, switching the chips to other slots, and all sorts of things but to no avail. I worked diligently with the CSR who was great but nothing could be helped: it had to go back to the factory.

That was March 12. Today is the 26th. I got the computer on February 26th. When I called today, they still do not have an expected ship date and, worse, the Hardware Support Group (which is apparently where my laptop is) has not given a reason for the delayed shipment. Here's what the support page shows:

Current status

Hewlett-Packard is currently repairing or replacing your product. Your replaced/repaired product is scheduled to arrive at your location on the expected delivery date listed below.

Expected Delivery Date:03/23/2007

Of course, today is March 26th...

Do yourself a favor: at least consider that this could happen to you before you give HP your money for one of these top of the line laptops.

UPDATE: April 16, 2007 - I finally got a call back from my case manager today and, although she told me that the laptop was built already and ready to ship last week, that was not the case. The laptop is still being built and "should arrive this week." When I pressed for more specific information, I was able to only get an order number but she said that it wouldn't do me any good. I browsed to the hpshopping.com order status page and tried entering the number but that page does not work lol. When I enter my phone number, it always returns "Please enter a valid phone number". Anyway, I'm getting sidetracked...

So, it has been FIFTY THREE DAYS since I gave them my $2100 and I still don't have a laptop nor do I even have a tracking number or ship date or anything. I told my case manager today that, it didn't matter what she said, I wasn't going to believe anything she told me unless I had a tracking number of some kind that I could find on their or UPS/FED-EX's website. She has repeatedly told me one thing and not followed through.

Example: she told me on March 30th that they would provide a replacement laptop and that it would take 7-14 business days to arrive. Fine, I said... However, today, she said that it is actually 7-14 business days from when hpshopping.com received the order which was April 5th, an entire week later. Arrggh s- so frustrating.

UPDATE: As of April 11, 2007 - a full month after I shipped my laptop back to HP Support, I *still* do not have a laptop or a refund. That means that I paid $2048 on February 22nd, received my laptop on March 1, and I sent it back to HP Support on March 12 because it constantly turned itself off. HP Support has now had my laptop (or, more succinctly, my *money*) for an entire month - more than twice as long as I had it. I finally received a return call yesterday afternoon after leaving five messages in five days on the Case Manage support line only for her to tell me that she couldn't provide a new case number or any new tracking information. The website still shows that my laptop will be "shipped on March 23, 2007" lol.

Dude, that sucks.

I would get one of those cooling pads if you are going to leave it on all day and have such a high ghz chip. Whenever I contact HP, I just send them an email and I don't have to wait on the phone. I wait on the email, instead. Go through the support website to send the email.

Peace, bro.

Oh man, I bought a HP DV6000 series from Costco, it worked ok so far. But again, I haven't spent any significant amount of time on it.

I will get my fingers crossed and hope it is ok, but I got a 90-day return guarantee from Costco, so hopefully it won't be too bad.

Good idea - I think I will. Thanks :)

Maybe I should've bought mine from Costco! I tried :(

I talked to HP today and they told me that, since it has been 21 days since I bought my laptop, they cannot refund it lol. I blew a gasket! in the end, they made everything right. I will post a follow-up later. I'm not 100% happy but it beats Small Claims Court!

Well, I spoke too soon. HP has NOT made it right. I *still* have no computer lol. Today is April 8th and they have had my computer for almost a month. In fact, they've now had my computer twice as long as I ever had.

They won't call me back either. I have been escalated to a case manager but, when I call back on the number, no one has ever answered and it goes to a voice mail that says, "Please leave your name and number and we'll call you back within a few hours." I'll called that number about a dozen times and left five messages and I have never, EVER gotten a call back :(

Wish me luck lol

lol - HP Sales called me today asking me how my new computer was doing. I explained the problem and they transferred me to a supervisor who promptly told me that he cannot help me because they don't have any access to or dealings with Tech Support.

They were calling me about an HP Customer Loyalty program and wanted to sell me more HP products lol

I have a dv9000t too. I got the 512Mb video too with 2Gb ram. I have left mine on a long period of time too, sometimes at night. I leave it on to do files sharing and when I get up in
the morning it has rebooted, ugh. I also have Unreal tournament and when I play this for 10 minutes it shuts down too, argh!!!.
My problem is is that they sell these things and then they suggest to buy a cooler for it?!!! Do I buy a car without a radiator? There should be textured heatsinks added to this thing to keep it cool. I have played with old Pentium 3 processors in desktop PC's and when I overclock them I must cool it more with a larger fan or heatsink. It should be a safe assumption that when you purchase a laptop that they put these things thru the wringer to see if they stay cool?
The engineers can develop a better
heatsink. Look at this one for a desktop

href="http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowImage.aspx?Image=35-108-037-01.JPG%2c35-108-037-02.JPG%2c35-108-037-03.JPG%2c35-108-037-04.JPG&CurImage=35-108-037-01.JPG&Depa=0&Description=Swiftech+MCX6400-V+CPU+Cooling+Heatsink+-+Retail">heatsink

It looks like it has machining screw taps used to increase surface area, can't they d the same with our notebooks? or even water cooling? Its very sad that it takes us to test drive their notebooks for them. I really like my notebook , I love the speed and the display and I have gotten used to the keyboard the more I use it. Its a pitful solution to have to resort to getting my money back. I would just like a recall so you can go to a circuit city or best buy (their authorized service centers) and within a couple hours get a fix with a better fan or heatsink or both!

I contacted HP support, the heat problem could be a power management issue. Sound weird, yes, but this fix seemed to solve my problem with my custom built dv9000t. I have the duo2 2.0Ghz and the 512mb video with 2GB of ram. 10 minutes into Unreal Tournament 2004 and it would just shut it down.

Here is the fix.
Reboot and reset your BIOS to defaults.

Then to reinstall the power management on the Notebook, please perform the steps below.

To uninstall and then reinstall Power Management in Windows XP by following these steps

1. Click Start, select Control Panel, and then choose Performance and Maintenance.
2. Click the System icon to open the System properties window.
3. Select the Hardware tab and click Device Manager.
4. Click the plus (+) sign next to System Devices.
5. Right-click the ACPI Fixed Features button and select Uninstall.
6. Restart the system.

NOTE: If the system prompts for the Windows XP CD, specify the location as C:\i386 or C:\i386\drivercache.

On restarting the system, Windows will automatically detect and install Power Management on the computer.

This is it.

Also another tip, set your notebook on something hard so the fan is not covered. I am using a wooden cutting board , when it sits on my ottoman, especially if I keep it running overnight if I file share. The wood absorbs a lot of heat. My gaming time is now too long for my own good. :D Hope this helps. ;D

Well, I'll try that but I ran this on both Windows 2003 and Windows Vista and it still shut it down. Thanks for the heads up though. If/when HP sends me a laptop, I'll try this if it acts up again.

I too have an HP Pavilion dv9000 that is shutting off for reasons I believe are related to overheating. To add to the insult, by HP Ipaq 6925 is in for repair for the 3rd time. I'm afraid to send my laptop in for fear they will damage it, as was the case with previous service calls to HP. I bought the laptop on my Amex and am disputing the charge until HP proves they can provide me with a working laptop. I'll let Amex deal with them...

I feel your pain. I paid $2600 for my HP Pavilion dv9000 notebook. I had requested with online chat..on the 20th day that I wanted to return it because it was SLOW, crashed all the time when I tried to multi-task with various programs (main reason I bought it), gets too hot...I could go on and on.

So the bonehead on chat support tells me that I need to try a few things before he can authorize return. So I try them...they don't work...I get back to him on the 22nd day after I've had the laptop and I'm told...SORRY, you can return the laptop up to 21 days!!!!

So now move up to 2 months later and I'm so pissed about my issues that I procrastinate contacting them.

I finally contact them after not being able to work on Excel without it crashing and not saving my files. IE crashes ALL THE TIME. Any program takes up to 2 minutes to load (for $2600??? I think NOT).

I'm so fed up. So today I requested to escalate my case which she said she would.

I PAID premium support...I paid extended battery (laptop lasts less than 1 hour unplugged)...and premium laptop...I should get waht I paid for.

Afterall, I'm a single mom who just got laid off by guess who...INTEL.

Give a woman a friggin break already you big ass corps.

Here's what I paid $2600 for and should have only paid at best..$1000 for the quality and performance:

HP Pavilion DV9000t

- Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium
- Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo T5200(1.60GHz/2MB L2Cache)
- 17.0" WSXGA+ BrightView Widescreen (1680x1050)
- 512MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7600
- HP Imprint Finish + Microphone
- 2048MB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
- 200GB 7200RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (100GB x 2)
- FREE Upgrade - LightScribe DVD+/-RW w/Double Layer
- Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network w/Bluetooth
- TV Tuner w/remote control
- High Capacity 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

And of course the docking station with wireless keyboard and mouse.

That's an awesome suggestion about Amex and disputing your charge. I'm going to have to look into that with my bank card.

Ater this experience, I'm going MAC.

Hey!
I had a dv1000 since August 2005. I custom built it and everything. I then added the ADP warranty for 2 years.

In February, my laptop, which is still under warranty, was just shutting down like you guys are claiming. HP Cust. Supp. told me to hold the power down, do the RAM thing, All of that. I then sent in.

I got it back, and they said they replaced the Mother board and "Re-imaged" my hard drive (reformat).

It corrected the problem. A mother board replacement correct this type of problem. Although, the dv9000 series has been out less than a year. Soon they will realize that they put crap hardware in it. I heard of one line of notebooks that you could send it to them for free and they would replaced the faulty hardware. If it is brought to them enough they would do the same with DV9000's.

Beware if they "re-image" your hard drive, it might come back slower and the reason for that is they install everything back on to your notebook, but they don't clean the registry. which greatly slows down the computer.

I called them back, about this problem, and due to policy I had to send it back to them before we can look at other options.

I got it back and it was still slow, so I called my case manager and he said lets build you a new notebook.

I am now waiting for a fully maxed out TX1000z. It has been 8 days since I talked to my case manager, so I have another 6 to wait for my notebook.

Basically if you demand and yell at the poor Indian dudes they are pretty good about referring you to corporate.

And my experience with the case manager has been pretty good.

Hp computers are usually really decent. The Cust. Supp. sucks, but I think corporates is on top of it.The best thing of all is their extended warranties. best money i have ever spent. I got a $2000 notebook/tablet for the price of a $1530 notebook.

Good Luck

Cody

Sorry to hear all of this. I would go with Dell!! I have a HP DV1331SE, shuts off all the time been fixed 3 times, still same problem. I finally gave up on it and bought a Dell. Been super so far, and support is great. I bought the accidental coverage. I drop it I get brand new in 3 days. I for one will never go back to HP for computers. Printers are great though!!

Hi! Cody again. I recieved my tx 10002 and so far it works really well! Good Luck!

The two Pavilion dv9000z notebooks that we bought in 8/2006 for $4,500 have been absolutely unreliable for use. The power management systems, batteries, and BIOS have been replaced, reset, etc. online first, then in Memphis @ the repair center. The machines just don't work and have major power issues. Ours are used on cooling units or raised forks, but if you are running it long, or on battery for more than a minimum time, it is only a matter of time before it just "goes down."

We have paid 3rd party IT professionals (high end) over $1,200 to date on assessing these notebooks and working with HP to get them running or keep them running.

HP has been "unreliable and irresponsible" in providing replacements or credits. Today, one machine boots with various letters and symbols (versus Windows) and an alert comes on "for a memory dump" before it crashes. It disappears so fast you can't even read it [especially to the foriegn language customer service person who could not get the HP order number without considerable aid].

Todays last call was prior to filing small claims actions on each machine separately; $5,000 apiece under NH law and up to triple penalty if HP knew of this problem and intentional disregareded it (i.e., $15,000 apiece).

We are hoping that an English speaking Attorney for HP will contact us and give us our money, and costs, back.

I'm having the same issue. Have you found a fix or resolved this issue?

I resolved it by sending it back and waiting 64 days for a replacement. The replacement is working well and has been for about six weeks now.

I sent my HP DV6000 in for repairs after 10 months of reliable service. The graphics card just blew on it one day. I sent it in on 8-23 and I still don't have it back yet. The anticipated delivery date still show 9/18. (Hello - Today is 10/3). I finally got a case manager to call me, but I missed the call by five minutes. I have tried calling back for the past three days, but I either get voice mail or today I get hung up on because voice mail is full.

And BTW this is a replacement laptop for the dv5000 that I originally bought. It didn't last longer than 2 months before it was in for repairs 3 times. Each time it went it, it came back in worse shape than when I sent it. Last year's tech support was way better than this years. Each time I sent my dv5000 in for repair, it was back within 3 days and when I did get assigned a case manager - I NEVER got voice mail or hung up on.

I think that HP's laptops have a lot of features, but they definitely have some cooling issues and that their support is just going down the tubes as time progresses.

My first DV 900t did the same thing ,shut down when running processor intensive programs. I had the note book repalced (that took 3.3 weeks) You have to remember if your replaceing a CTO unit it has to be built and shiped from Singapore. The replacement unit has worked grest for 10 months now and we run our computers almost 20 hours a day. It dose not matter if you get a HP or Dell not every unit is perfect all the time. Try getting Dell to replace a unit or get tech help. I have been a computer technician for 20 years and I can tell you the differance between the quality of HP and Dell is like a Infinity vs a Ford Pinto. The HP is built so much better. The quality of HP and support is still hands above any other OEM on this planet.

I have had the same problem purchesed a DV6000 the drive was dead in a week i returned to Comp USA where I purchased it and they took it back. They did not have the same laptop in stock and since it is for work i had to pick something up so i upgraded to a dv9330us for the same price bigger screen and 256 video card instead of the 128 cpu is a tick slower. Here is the problem with the overheationg on the HP's. The main fan runs at 25 percent of its rated speed and will only increase to a faster speed to disipate the heat if the CPU (both cores) are at 100 percent usage this will only happen if you are running prime 95 or some type of benchmarking program that will max out the cpu. the fan speed is based on cpu usage and not cpu temperature. This is why when you run games the laptop will shut off from overheating. the video card does almost all of the work in current games and not the cpu. i have looked all over the internet to hack the bios to change the settings on the fan so it will run cooler. If anyone has found a solution please email me at phil.hurbace@gmail.com. The only thing that i have found to keep my laptop from overheating is a powered laptop cooler that i made and using the power saver feature even when I am pluged in to underclock the computer. Since it came with Vista it is so slow.

Same problems here w/wife's HP zv5000 laptop. It overheats and then shuts down. This first started about one year after purchasing it. I called HP, and before they would help with anything, I had to pay them a warranty/maintenance fee, which I did. Then they told me to send it in for repairs (cost about $350). Got laptop back - worked fine for about six months, then same thing all over again. The web is chock full of similar complaints and experiences w/HP laptops, but do you think HP will acknowlege this? No way. Can't find anything on HP's site, nor do the phone techs seem to have ever heard of the problem before. Bottom line - last HP I'll ever buy.

Hey, Greetings from Thailand. I bought a top end Dv2000 series out here a year ago. Took it one month before it came to melt down.

1st the touch pad stopped working. Swiftly followed by the bluetooth, wireless, remote & Hdd.

It took 3 months to return from Bankok "under warranty". The Hdd & wireless chip were replaced but the touchpad buttons & bluetooth still didnt work.

I used a custom cooler tray with 4 80mm 12v fans over the main components.

Even with a ambiant room temp of 25C the GPU still ran at 70C idle. The Hdd was the same almost melting the case!

Since my warranty expired i decided to open it up "have lots of experiance with laptops"

Not only was it the worst build quality/design of laptop i had ever seen, but the HP monkeys had broken case clips & cable sliders on the MB!

I snail mailed & called hp in the states & received nothing but lip service. Complete waste of time!

Dont buy Hp laptops! "or Sony" they end up as nothing more than expensive paper weights. Asus are great & ive never heard of anyone having problems with Fujitsu.

*HP INVENT SOMETING*

Like better products & service! You should of stuck with printers & scanners.

*Post Mortem*

1. Multiple wires insulation melted.
2. Multiple Hdd yellow spots from heat damage.
3. Mainboard covered in adisive from cable stick pads & heat dammage.
4. Blue tooth chip missing. lol
5. Gpu not heat sunk. "thin metal top case under keyboard acts as one with no airflow" also heat damaged.
6. Overall warped top half of case.
7. Chucked in bin lost, $800 bought ASUS, problem solved!

Hp Pavilion Ze2308Wm
based on an AMD Mobile Sempron 2800+ processor with AMD PowerNow! Technology, running at a core speed of 1.6GHz.

I have a dv9000 series too. Although my experience didn't turn bad as early as it did with many of you chaps. I've had mine just over a year and it always seemed to be running too hot for my liking. I have the AMD Cpu model. Just a few weeks after my warranty expires it decides to cook off and now it won't even boot up.

I never looked into the history of this model until I had problems with it but now looking around it seems it generally is a troublesome series. The models with the NVIDIA 8400/8600 series graphics cards usually cook off first (some fault in GPU design/manufacturing - still unclear at this point), the models with Intel CPU's will tend to run very slowly (as their speedstep heat and power management actually slows them down when they run too hot). The AMD models usually run fine until they cook.

To me it seems like the whole design is thermally challenged, almost regardless of what parts go into it.

The wireless card is particularly anaemic in this series too.

I hate support from every company and avoid them at all cost. They're always too slow, inefficient and mostly dim.

I just bought a very cheap HP for my wife - just before my own machine cooked. I hope it's improved. I used to have warm fuzzies about HP, having used their laser printers for years, but I really feel they're letting themselves down with some of these desktop replacement laptops. They seem to be poorly designed.

Actually - I just bought a replacement laptop for my DV9000 model.

It's a 17" inch Asus - an X70Sr to be exact. So far I'm quite impressed. It was in the same price range as my HP and while it's design is not as attractive as the HP it definately runs cooler and in general the build quality is far superior.

I've also noticed my wireless network reception is far improved and I have fewer dropped packets. My wireless internet experience is vastly improved.

I welcome myself to the club "HP-screwed-me", my dv9323ea(Intel cpu and mobo) gave up yesterday. The screen just slowly lighted up when I turned it on and that's it - nothing follows, no BIOS screen and obviously no OS boot(XP Pro in my case). Tried ALL the advice from HP support site - zero help.
The warranty expired at late spring '08 - so, no luck on that front either.
My old notebook, Fujitsu-Siemens(over 4 years old), which is now being used by my parents, still works like a charm.

A neat little trick that helps. Get some velco tabs and place one side on the bottom of your laptop in a non vented place and to the other side get some caps that come off you perscription bottles. both your velcro peices have sticky sides. Place the caps 4 of them on the bottom of your laptop, wa-la you have four nice little legs that keep you laptop off the serface of what ever you have it sitting on an you can remove them when ever you want because they are velcroed on. it keeps the laptop about 3/4 of an inch off of the serface of the table. Stopped my laptop from shutting down during long periods of use.

Chuck
