Spambayes with Outlook 2007 - How to Configure Spambayes to Work on Windows XP/2003 and Outlook 2007

I did it! I'm sooooo happy :) No more of the crap Outlook 2007 junk mail and I don't have to deal with how crappy my ISP's spam filter is anymore - I *finally* configured SpamBayes successfully for Outlook 2007 (running on Windows XP and Windows 2003).

If you're tried to use Spambayes in Outlook 2007, you've likely gotten the "Cannot load Spambayes add-in" error:

I tried re-installing Outlook 2007, I tried reinstalling Spambayes but nothing worked :( I finally found a couple of places on the web that point to solutions for Outlook 2003 that, if I applied them to Outlook 2007, they finally worked. Here's what you need to know:

  1. First, you want to visit the Spambayes FAQs and particularly you want to read the one about turning off DEP protection (here)
  2. Second, you'll want to download the latest release of Spambayes - as of this writing, it is 1.1a4 (available from sourceforge here)

To get it to work:

Did it work? Worked for me and that makes me oh so happy! Boo MSFT for releasing such a crappy junk mail engine with no improvements. Boo Microsoft for making Outlook 2007 actually worse for junk mail than Outlook 2003. Boo Spambayes team for not upgrading/updating the website to work with Outlook 2007. Yay Spambayes team for totally rocking in every other aspect lol.

I hope this helps you - drop a line and let me know if it does or doesn't work for you.

Comments:
Followed the instructions, but on the very last step of adding Spambayes back in, I had a message saying that the Spambayes file was not a valid windows add-in.

Hmmmm - I don't know what to say. I did it on multiple computers so I'm not sure what could cause the problem :(

no dice. i've tried about every workaround i could find and had high hopes for this one.

i'm running a stable, clean, 90 day old installation of WinXPproSP3 and Outlook (not using Exchange). i manually imported my Outlook 2003 data into the new PST file (460MB). initial attempt April/2008: installed Spambayes as usual (Outlook add-in only, all users) then launched Outlook as i had no reason to expect any problems. Outlook crashed within 10 seconds:

"MS Office Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

after the crash the MS Error Report warns about a big file that needs to be transferred: "estimated transfer time on a 56K modem: 243 minutes". it took 10min on my 1024Mbps up pipe so whatever it contained it was big. afterwards the only way i could get Outlook to even start without crashing is to uninstall SpamBayes completely.

i did a little homework, saw others were having Spambayes/Outlook2007 problems and decided to come back to it. 3 months later i recognize that the junk engine in Outlook 2007 is lousy and i need to get Spambayes working. this time i installed alpha v1.1a4-070629 as instructed here: http://tinyurl.com/5q4umj. exact same result, had to uninstall SpBayes just to get Outlook to launch.

next i disabled BCM [KB903094] and tried installing Spambayes. nope.

then i tried your solution. same exact crash.

then i went to Outlook "Trust Center" and disabled all COM add-ins. here's the list:

-AveryAddin.Connect (Avery Wizard)
-Business Contact Manager for Outlook (wonder why was this still active after i did KB903094?)
-COM Addin for MD Office Outlook Connector
-MS Access Outlook Add-in for Data Collection & Publishing
-MS Exchange Unified Messaging
-MS Office Sharepoint Server Colleague Import Add-in
-MS Outlook Mobile Service
-MS VBA for Outlook Addin
-Xobni

there are now no "Active Apllication Addins". also disabled all "Exhange Client Extensions". reinstalled Spambayes, still the exact same result. i just ran MS Office Daignostics. no errors anywhere. this is really disappointing. if anyone has ideas i'm all ears.

I followed your instructions and they worked perfectly!!

Thank you so much for your help!!!!

Hi, didn't follow instructions, just added Outlook to DEP and that fixed the "serious error" problem that had suddenly appeared with Outlook 2007.

I was only stuck with Outlook's junk filter for couple of days, but that was enough. Now I am even more happy with SpamBayes!!
