Finally! A Working Version of Windows Desktop Search for Windows 2003

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?Fa... - Just released October 24, 2006.

In installed it just now on a Windows 2003 Standard Edition test server that also has Office 2007 Beta 2 Technical Refresh. This computer had been slow, slow, slow with tons and tons of disk activity slowing things down (it only slowed down after installing Office 2007) and I just couldn't figure out what was causing it. I installed the new Windows Desktop Search (kb917013) and wow! It's so much faster!

Yay!

Ok, I'm back.

Took a few weeks off the blog to records lots of new videos for LearnSqlServer.com, LearnDts.com, and LearnTransactSql.com (will show up during the November site updates) - lots and lots of good videos on replication (SQL 2005, 2000), DTS tasks, queries, joins and more. November will be a double month with basically double videos for all our sites (even the Windows and Exchange sites). Anyway, I'm going to blog more but I've found myself recording so many videos and responding to posts in our forums (http://forums.learnsqlserver.com/) that I haven't had as much time to blog about important/useful things :)

I'll do better!

Regular Expression Syntax in SSMS

http://forums.learnsqlserver.com/SqlServerTopic51....

I just posted my first regex in SSMS on our forums: http://forums.learnsqlserver.com/SqlServerTopic51....

I plan on adding to this since I use the RegEx find/replace feature soooooo much. I used to (and still sometimes do) use TextPad for my Regex F/R but now that it's built into SSMS, I can generally keep things in the one window.

Great To-Do List/Priorities Management Software

I've been playing with John Wood's Priorganizer for about the past month (they have a free trial here) and I finally purchased it this morning. I used to use the old Time Tracker/Issue Tracker ASP.NET starter application. It worked for a while and, since it was free, it was surely better than the $100+ defect management/Priorty list management software. The problem was that I spent so much time customizing it so that it fit my needs that I probably lost as much time with it as I gained hehe. I finally quit it about six months ago and then started using the ubiquitous text file with headers for TOP PRIORITY, MEDIUM, and LOW hehe. That's classy, eh?

Anyway, if you're looking for a "To Do" list manager or even a basic bug tracker, you can use Prioganizer for just $29. I thought it was a great deal that I'd pass along.

Oh, I would be remiss if I didn't also mention "On Time 2006" from http://axosoft.com/. This is truly amazing bug tracking software - it's not built for To Do list management or anything. It runs off SQL Server but, if you want it for an entire team, it's $500+. However, they have a FREE version - a fully functioning, self-installing-on-your-SQL-Server, version - so I highly recommend it. I've been using it here for defects and I find it easy enough to use. It's a bit complex but it gives you a ton of flexibility and reporting.

The free edition is called the "OnTime 2006 Small Team Edition" and you can download a WinForm version or an entire ASP.NET site.

Google CodeSearch Launched Today

Just a side note - http://www.google.com/codesearch - to let you know, in case you didn't know already, that Google CodeSearch launched today. Very cool! Just as a lark, I did a search for "whigham" and it returned more than 10 pages of results although filtering it to just C# returned zero rows.

Oh well - I don't know how helpful this will be nor do I think I'll likely use it to much. It searches for actually code; not tutorials with explanations. What you get back from the search are things like .sql files or .cs files so you're looking at raw code. Interesting though...
