An Overview of the AdventureWorks Database
- Video Series
Video Category:
Database Creation, Management and Best Practices
Skill Level:
100 (Beginner)
Versions/Editions Covered:
SQL Server 2005
AdventureWorks is a very important database in SQL Server 2005 because it (a) is designed to show you how to (correctly) use many of the new features in SQL Server 2005 (as befits a sample database from Microsoft), and (b) it is used in most of the examples in the Books Online, and (c) because so many people use AdventureWorks in their demos! This video series walks you through the AdventureWorks architecture and tries to make sense of it all. AdventureWorks can be intimidating for someone new to SQL Server 2005 but, after watching this series of videos, you'll have a much stronger knowledge of the design and decisions in AdventureWorks.

Miscellaneous Bits & Pieces:
To turn off the system databases and objects inside Enterprise Manager edit the registration by right-clicking the server name and choosing "Edit SQL Server Registration Properties". Uncheck the box at the bottom next to "Show system databases and objects"
"Collation" is one of the most misunderstood terms in SQL Server. In a nutshell collation defines (a) the characters that are allowed in a column, (b) the way those characters will be sorted in the ORDER BY, and (c) how those characters will be compared (using the WHERE clause, for example)
Helpful Keyboard Shortcuts: "ALT" + "F4" closes the application or, if no applications are open, prompts you to shutdown/log off
